Charlottesville
Just before I was I was about to go to sleep I made the mistake of going through Twitter. Believe it or not, I had not looked at the social media app all day. Unfortunately, I came across this. I have not been under a rock the past few days, I have seen the abhorrent acts in Charlottesville.
I saw the pictures of people marching down the street with torches chanting racist epithets. I saw people who claimed they wanted to protect a statue of Robert E. Lee but in reality they wanted to instil fear in the people of Charlottesville and send a message to the world.
These people were fascists, white supremacists, and American nazis more colloquially known as the alt-right.
The next day, a supporter of the Nazis, barrelled his car through counter-protesters injuring 19 and killing one. I felt for the victims but, one voice was neutral in his lack of condemnation; none other than the President of the United States. He blamed “all sides” for the violence of the past few days. On Monday he tweeted that the “Fake News” had done him wrong again. His comments today however, have kept me from my rest because they were so awful. Worse, they were dangerous for our American democracy.
To be clear, the alt-right protesters were inciting violence by flying their flags of hatred and chanting their anti-Semitic rants.
People who fly the Nazi flag tacitly or explicitly believe that Jewish people should be gassed and eradicated from the Earth. The same for homosexuals, political dissidents and gypsies. Those who fly the Confederate battle flag either tacitly or explicitly believe that all African-Americans should be enslaved and their human rights removed because, they believe that anyone who isn’t white isn’t human.
There is no room for debate here, that is what those regimes believed in, that is what those regimes fought for and that is what those regimes died for. Those flags represent their lost cause.
Yet, those same people expect the world to sit silently by as they march down the streets of America threatening the very existence of the people of the country. Demanding our silence as they chant "blood and soil" and that "Jews will not replace them".
Alt-Right personalities keep demanding that the press cover the dangerous people on the left who caused the violence as well. Just like the school bully they want to create chaos but are surprised when someone who they thought was weak fights back.
To see a first hand account of the violence watch this report from Vice News. All I can say is that the reporter was one brave lady.
When Trump failed to condemn the action of the fascists and deaths over the weekend, he clearly wanted to ensure that his fanatical base knew he was on their side but, his comments today show that he truly does not care for this country or anyone who does not express clear and unyielding loyalty to him. At the end of his shameful comments today he commented on his Charlottesville vineyard. Not the dead or, those who created the violence but, his own property. These are not the actions of stable person. These are the actions of a person who cares not of the people but only of power.
A person like that in a powerful office is a very dangerous thing to democracy. Just a few days ago a poll was taken of Trump supporters. The question was a simple one, whether they would back postponement if Trump said the election should be delayed to ensure only eligible American citizens can vote, and whether they would back postponement if Trump and Republicans in Congress said it should be delayed to ensure only eligible American citizens can vote.
Terrifyingly, 56 percent of GOP voters said yes. Even worse, Trump has a commission looking in to voter fraud right now.
Would you really put it past him NOT to try it?
Do you understand why I don't sleep well at night anymore?
