Hasn't happened yet....
So here we are. At the inevitable crossroads of Scotland remaining with the UK or, leaving and being an independent state within the single market of the European Union.
It has been a little over 24 hours since Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, "surprised" the UK Government with an intention to seek an section 30 order which will allow the Scottish Government to have another independence referendum.
Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that I didn't say that Nicola Sturgeon had set the date for a referendum, set the question or even announced a white paper. All that was announced was that she was going to ask for the legal right to start that process.
Reading the papers and watching the news today one would have assumed the new Scottish Referendum is tomorrow afternoon. The enraged Unionists were quick with the anger at the very thought of Scotland's First Minister doing her utmost to ensure that every option was open to the people of Scotland as the UK heads towards Brexit.
No matter that her announcement was in line with the 2015 SNP Manifesto commitment to have another referendum should there be a change in circumstances. No matter the fact that Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain. Those who oppose independence took to arms to defend the Union that was changing their world for them.
On the other side we have seen smiles from SNP Members all day but, the point remains that nothing has happened yet.
News reports have already started with snap(UK-Wide) poll stating that Britons are against a referendum in Scotland. The tried and tested argument of linking any drop in the Pound Sterling to the idea of a referendum on Scottish Independence was also trialled today in the Herald.
Another interesting trait that I'm noticing are the abundance of headlines that claim to have the direct line to what the First Minister is thinking. The best one I've seen was a clip from Sky News
stating that the First Minister was pushed into the referendum by the former First Minister. In a surprising move, another journalist from STVcalled the report, "100% Garbage". Not a Member of the SNP not a Twitter hack but, a serious journalist called another journalist's story, "Garbage".
It's day two. There will be many more days before we even know what this is going to look like. The only certainty now is that the gloves are coming off quick.
Brexit is quickly being pushed to the media backburner while still THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS STORY OF THE MONTH.
And that is my real worry. The path the UK Government is leading the country down is unknown and uncharted. They are walking into the mire with only their sense of duty and honour to keep them warm.
At the end of the road lies, not a warm inn but a cold table. The UK is about to become the junior partner in Brexit negotiations. With no experience in these matters and no discernible plan outside of protect the banks and car industry. Literally everything else is up for grabs. Now is the time to put all of your cards on the table. Independence may not be palatable to everyone but Scotland did indeed choose a different path and, when push came to shove, their voice was overpowered at the ballot box and ignored in Westminster.
This is the next logical step.
