The Beginning
Aller Anfang ist schwer
After many years of working in Westminster, I have decided to dip my toe into the world of blogging. I've been here for nearly seven years and during that time I've seen three different UK Governments, two Scottish Governments #bothvotesSNP and one American President.
I don't think anyone works in Parliament without getting the desire to get their points across. For most people, that is easily accomplished in the Sports and Social Club or the Stranger's Bar. For me, I got tired of constantly debating Tory researchers over the SAME THREE ARGUMENTS and I decided that this is a much better use of my time.
The UK has experienced a massive sea change since 2009. When I started, David Cameron was the leader of the opposition, Gordon Brown was the Prime Minister, Labour's hold on Scotland was unquestioned, Nick Clegg was the leader of the third largest party in the UK and Alex Salmond was a man with an unobtainable dream of a referendum on independence.
By 2016, David Cameron would be six months into his second term as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown would be out of the commons, Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg would be just one of eight of Liberal Democrat MPs left in the Commons and Alex Salmond would still be an MP, not First Minister, not leader of the SNP but part of a the third largest party and Westminster and in the UK who nearly succeeded in winning a referendum on independence.
Part of the UK's global influence is that it has a sense of political stability. Governments last for decades here and the House of Lords offers serious access to the corridors of power as well. Those aspects are just a few of the things that give the UK a stable reputation but, sometimes, very rarely, one can live in a time where that whole system goes to hell. The system that creates that sense of stability is the same that can create chaos but, from chaos, change arises. So only time will tell what changes will arise from this period.
