Trump’s second week
He’s doing a great job…
Of keeping his electorate happy.
In the first two weeks Trump has done exactly what he promised. The wall has received Presidential approval and he’s begun the Muslim ban. (I know he doesn’t call it that but, he also doesn’t call himself orange.)
Note: Section 4(e) of Trump's ban excludes persons who are part of "a religious minority in his country of nationality facing religious persecution" so this is most definitely the beginning to the ban.
The left are incensed, as one would expect but, there is a small group of people in the financial world who are starting to worry that Trump may actually go through with his agenda.
There clearly was an unverified belief that Trump’s rhetoric would not match his actions in office. Some people believed that the mantle of office would, somehow, restrain his more controversial desires.
However, this is not the case.
Yesterday, he hung up on the Australian Prime Minister because he was surprised to learn that
he and President Obama agreed to a refugee exchange.
No matter what you think of the person on the other end of the line, a President calling a Prime Minister should at least have the courtesy to end the call calmly.
This is just more evidence of a person who thinks he has no one to hold him accountable. That's a problem when he's in charge of the most powerful military in the world.
This week we learned that Donald Trump approved a mission in Yemen where a Navy SEAL and 30 civilians were killed. According to Reuters, Trump green-lit the covert mission "without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations." Effectively, the troops were sent into a situation that they should never have been near. I'm sure their superior training ensured that more American casualties were avoided but, the Commander-in-Chief should not have sent them into that situation without the best information possible.
This will be the first of many missions that will put American armed service personnel in danger and it will all be on his head. I would hope that this jars him in to understanding what power he really has but, I’m not holding my breath.
The Donald is succeeding in keeping his base over-charged on incendiary rhetoric. Feeding them the low-grade, gravy-covered kibble they have come to expect from the Howler-in-Chief.
Furthermore, anyone who does not agree with him is deemed fake and will be ignored by the administration.
Which has led to his administration being treated like an authoritarian regieme.
So far, he isn’t ruling for the whole of America, he’s ruling for his electorate.
Unfortunately, the American President cannot be successful by only appealing to one constituency.
Trump needs to remember that he did not win the popular vote, therefore, he has to win over the nearly three million more people who didn’t vote for him. It will be very interesting to see if he and his team understand this over the next few years.
